Political Papers Collections

The NMSU Library Archives and Special Collections currently is open to all researchers Monday through Friday, 9:00 am- 4:00 pm. The Caroline E. Stras Research Room is located in Branson Library, 4th floor. We are happy to provide virtual reference services for those who cannot visit our facility in person.

Consists of the political and personal papers of senators, congressmen, governors, and other legislators from New Mexico dating back to 1912, highlighting their political careers at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Senator Pete V. Domenici Archives

In office from 1973-2009, Pete V. Domenici is the longest-serving United States Senator from New Mexico. During his career, Domenici was the senior Republican on the Senate's Budget and Energy and Natural Resources committees.

Ed Foreman Papers (No Ms number currently assigned). Foreman has the distinction of being the first member of the U.S. House of Representatives elected from two different states - Texas (1963-1965) and New Mexico (1969-1971).
Thomas G. Morris Papers (Ms 0031). U.S. Representative from New Mexico, from the Tucumcari area, served in the House from 1958-1969.
E.S. "Johnny" Walker Papers (Ms 0021) U.S. Representative from New Mexico (1965-1969), from the Albuquerque area.

Garrey Carruthers Papers (Ms 0305). President of NMSU since 2013, Carruthers is the former Dean of the NMSU College of Business Administration and Economics. Carruthers also served as Governor of New Mexico from 1987-1990.
Herbert J. Hagerman Papers (Ms 0104). Territorial Governor of New Mexico, 1906-1907.
James F. Hinkle (Ms 0182). Governor of New Mexico, 1923-1924.
Edwin L. Mechem Papers (Ms 0292). Governor of New Mexico, 1951-1954, 1957-1958, 1961-1962.

New Mexico Judiciary

Rudy Apodaca Papers (Ms 0443) - A Las Cruces area attorney, Apodaca served on the New Mexico Court of Appeals 1988-2000. Apodaca is also a novelist, and some of his works are in the holdings of the Special Collections unit.
John Lemon Family Papers (Ms 0233). A magistrate from the Territorial period, based in Mesilla.
