Services for Users with Disabilities

Policy No: 016
Approval Date: March 3, 2004; January 25, 2011
Historical Notes:

Policy:

The NMSU Library is committed to providing equitable access to information for all members of the University community.  Library staff will make good-faith efforts to accommodate requests for assistance in obtaining and using library resources and services.  In the event that requests exceed what the Library can accommodate, users may be referred to other campus offices for additional support.

Services:

Library Instruction
The Library Instruction Program will strive to make appropriate accommodations for users with disabilities in the Library's classrooms.  Requestors should notify the Instruction Coordinator in advance of the class or instruction session to discuss needs and determine arrangements.

Research Assistance
General reference and research assistance are available in person, over the phone, and via electronic forms (email, IM) during designated service hours.  Users may also schedule appointments with library subject specialists to discuss resources in a particular subject area or for assistance with an in-depth research project.

Retrieval and Reproduction of Library Materials
Library staff will retrieve materials from the stacks or other areas of the Library upon the request of users with disabilities.  Requests for known items may be made at either the Library Service Desk or through the Library's Request It! Service.  Based on the nature of the request, materials may be retrieved immediately, held for pick-up at the Zuhl Service Desk (for seven days), or scanned and delivered electronically.  Request It Delivers! courier services are also available for delivery to/pick-up from main campus locations (coming soon).  Proxy borrowers (assistants, friends, family members) may be designated to check out library materials by any user with disabilities who requests such assistance.

Library photocopiers and printers are self-service and require a copy/printing card or cash. Self-service scanners that save or e-mail scans are available in both libraries free of charge.  Users with disabilities may request help with any of the copiers or scanners from the Library Service Desk staff in either building during regular business hours.

Assistive Technology and Access to Electronic Resources:

The Library provides the following assistive technology and equipment.  Library staff can offer basic assistance in using this equipment.  In-depth training in the use of software and/or equipment should be arranged with University Disability Services.

All Library computers include the Ease of Access accessibility suite from Microsoft, which includes a magnifier, narrator, on-screen keyboard, keyboard shortcuts, and other tools.

Several computers in the Zuhl Library ICT/ASNMSU cluster provide students, faculty, and staff with access to networked software programs such as ZoomText and JAWS.

Both Branson and Zuhl service desks have TDD phones.  The number for the Branson desk is (575) 646-7864.  The number for the Zuhl desk is (575) 646-7817.  Magnifying glasses are available at the Branson and Zuhl Service Desks for users with visual impairments.

Access to Library Facilities:

Physical Access
Both Branson and Zuhl libraries offer ground-floor access and power-assisted front doors.  Accessible parking spaces with ramp access have been designated in the parking lots close to both buildings.  Both library buildings feature elevators and directory signs labeled with Braille that are close to the main lobbies.  Library restrooms include wheelchair-accessible stalls.  Both libraries include work areas with wheelchair-accessible study tables (with and without computers) on the ground floor of both library buildings.  Library classrooms (both on the ground floor) also feature raised-height computer desks.
