NMSU Library Resources for Journalism and Mass Communications Researchers

The NMSU Library offers a wide range of resources to support the University's teaching and research programs in journalism and mass communications. The general reference collection includes directories, bibliographies, encyclopedias, almanacs and other resources useful to journalism researchers. Online databases available to the NMSU community include Business Source Premier, CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online), CQ Electronic Library (public policy and government), and LEXIS-NEXIS Academic/Congressional/Statistical Universe (full text news, congressional, and statistical information). The general collections include numerous materials in the areas of advertising, broadcasting, journalism, photography/photojournalism, and communication. The Library also maintains print and online subscriptions to key national, international, and regional press titles. In addition to the assistance provided by the Library's Reference and Research Services Department, the Library's subject specialist for journalism and mass communications is available to assist researchers with in-depth questions in this area.


Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations

Ad Council - The Ad Council is a private, non-profit organization that "produces, distributes and promotes thousands of public service campaigns on behalf of non-profit organizations and government agencies."

AdFlip - AdFlip bills itself as the "world's largest archive of classic print ads."

Agency ComPile
- Online directory of marketing communication agencies.  Searchable by region, state, agency speciality, etc.

American Academy of Advertising - Professional and scholarly association for those interesting in advertising and advertising education. The site includes links to fellowships, jobs, and conference opportunities.

American Marketing Association - Professional association for marketers. The site includes links to research, best practices, and career information. Some sections restricted to current members.

Emergence of Advertising in America (EAA) - Collection of over 9,000 images relating to the history of advertising in the United States. Images and information are drawn from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University.

Knowthis.com: knowledge source for marketing
- Reference site for those involved in marketing, market research, advertising, selling, promotion, and other marketing-related areas.

Public Relations Society of America - the world's largest organization of P.R. practicioners. The site includes career links, PR tipsheets, and networking guides.

Research Resources - Collection of advertising resources brought together by the Department of Advertising and U. Texas-Austin.


Broadcasting

Arbitron - Media and marketing research firm providing information relevant to radio broadcasters, cable companies, advertisers, advertising agencies and outdoor advertising companies. Site includes station profiles and free demographic and related studies. Some content is restricted.

National Association of Broadcasters - Professional association representing the interests of free, over-the-air radio and television broadcasters. The site includes links to career information, issue papers, etc. Some content is restricted to members.

NewsLab - Non-profit organization that works to help television newsooms "find better ways of telling important stories that are often difficult to convey on television." Includes online resources for effective reporting on crime, tips for using graphics, etc.

Nielsen Media Research - Nielsen conducts research on television audiences. Most Nielsen research studies are fee-based, and some reports are only available to subscribers.

Television and Radio News Research - Collection of research on the broadcast industry, specifically the individuals in the industry, provided by an emeritus professor from U. Missouri-Columbia's School of Journalism.

IPI World Press Freedom Review - Sponsored by the International Press Institute, this site offers updates on the status of the press throughout the world.

World News Connection - Online news service offering an extensive array of translated and English-language news and information. Sponsored by the U.S. government.

IRE's Beat Source Guide - Sponsored by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc., this site offers a unique approach to finding Internet-based information organized by "beat."

National Press Photographer's Association - The NPPA "is dedicated to the advancement of photojournalism, its creation, editing and distribution, in all news media."
