Tip Sheet

Fall semester, 2001

For the purposes of this tip sheet, I've selected the topic: Managing Problem Employees

1. Locating a book on your topic:

v     From the library's home page (http://lib.nmsu.edu), select Catalog.

v     Click on Author/Title/Subject from the menu of choices.

v     Type in the subject of your search, e.g. problem employees

v     On the pull down menu on the right, click on subject to highlight it, and click search or press enter

v     From the titles listed for you, choose the ones you want to look at more closely for your bibliography, mark down the call number, and retrieve the book from the shelves.

2. Locating a journal or magazine or newspaper article:

v     Use the two databases devoted to Business: ABI and Business Source Elite

v     From the library's home page (http://lib.nmsu.edu), select Article Databases

v     In the box at this screen, arrow down to either ABI or BSE, highlight it, and click on Go There underneath the box

From ABI, choose Guided Search from the orange box

From BSE, choose Guided Search from the green bar

Choosing guided search will allow you to negotiate your search more precisely.

v     Click on peer reviewed to limit your choices to scholarly journal articles

v     For newspaper articles, limit your search to newspapers using the pull down menus

3. Locating a book review:

v     In ABI, select book review from the pull down menu at the fourth "and" right above the word "current"

v     In BSE, type in book review in the search box and connect it to your main subject search, e.g. problem employees AND book review

4. Locating a government document:

v     From Article Databases, arrow down and select GPO Monthly Catalog, click on Go There.

v     Using the same search strategy from your previous search, enter your keywords in the search boxes and click search.

*Keep in mind that the federal government operates differently from corporate America, and the articles will reflect this difference. Choose an article that allows you to transfer the key concepts used in the article to corporate America.

v     Another choice is Government Periodicals Index, from the selection of databases.

v     Additional choices are: http://firstgov.gov/, www.fedworld.gov, or library.Vanderbilt.edu/romans/fdtf.html

v     References from these 3 databases are all government publications

5. Web site

v     Use your favorite browser, e.g. Google, Altavista, and enter your keywords in the search box
