Use the databases below to search for articles via keyword, subject, or author. Links to the electronic version of the article are often available. If the article is only available in print, these databases will give you the library's call number (location) for the journal.

PubMed – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

1960 – Present. For biomedical bibliographic citations this is the place to go. This is a searchable database of citations to biomedical literature. PubMed citations link to Entrez nucleotide, protein and structure records when available.

      Entrez Global Query - a cross-database search option that searches many Entrez databases at one time, including PubMed.

BIOSIS –  http://lib.nmsu.edu/resources/dbbiosis2.html

1985 – Present.  Start here for plant biology and other non-medical biology and genetics articles and conference papers (only 34% of the journals in BIOSIS overlap with PubMed). A "sequence data" field is available in records from 1989 to present, but rather than containing actual nucleotide or amino acid sequences this field contains the accession number for the sequence from databases such as GenBank, EMBL and SwissProt, if the author included this number in the article text.

INSPEC – http://lib.nmsu.edu/resources/dbinspec.html 

1969 – Present. Indexes scientific and technical journals, proceedings, books and dissertations in the fields of physics, information technology, electrical engineering and computer sciences. INSPEC includes all the IEEE, IEE and ACM literature as well as many other publishers. Updated weekly. Available from FirstSearch.

1967 – Present. For access to the chemical literature this is the place to start. (Use the link above to download the SciFinder software for home or office. In the Zuhl Library, ask the reference librarian for the SciFinder workstation.) Produced by CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service), Chemical Abstracts is the leading bibliographic information service providing citations to conference papers, journal articles, patents and other documents pertinent to chemistry (and it is to our advantage that they define chemistry very broadly).

1985 – Present. Also known as Science Citation Index. This is an index to scientific journal articles that also allows you to search for citations to a particular article. You look up the reference to a work that you know about to find more recent journal articles that have cited it. Cited reference searching is a unique way to trace ideas and subjects from past research into the present day. Searchable by author, keyword, and cited reference. Unfortunately this database does not cover conference literature.

Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts –

1993 – Present. Provides access to 135 research publications focusing on agricultural products involving both plants and animals, new applications across the food industry, and wide-ranging environmental developments. Also focuses on plant genome studies. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.

Algology, Mycology & Protozoology Abstracts (Microbiology C) 

2002 – Present. For the benefit of researchers working with algae, fungi, protozoa, or lichens. The scope of coverage includes reproduction, growth, life cycles, biochemistry, genetics, and infection and immunity in man, other animals, and plants. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.

Applied Science & Technology Abstracts 

1983 – Present. Leads users to the latest findings in every area of science, engineering, and technology. Covers more than 600 periodicals, including trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals. Available via FirstSearch.

Ei Village (Engineering)

Access to the Compendex database of engineering information and other resources for professional engineers.

Environmental Engineering Abstracts

Covers the world literature pertaining to technological and engineering aspects of air and water quality, environmental safety, and energy production. More than 700 primary journals are thoroughly indexed and abstracted. Over 2,500 additional sources, including monographs and conference proceedings, are also monitored for relevant articles. General Science Abstracts –

1984 – Present. Journals and magazines from the U.S. and Great Britain, covering such subjects as anthropology, astronomy, biology, computers, earth sciences, medicine and health, and much more. Includes articles, reviews, biographical sketches, and letters to the editor. Available via FirstSearch.

IEEE Xplore  -

1988 – Present. Provides access to all IEEE and IEE journals, conference proceedings and standards.
