Social Sciences & Education Databases

Unless otherwise indicated, remote access to these databases is available only to NMSU faculty, students, and staff.

  • American State Papers, 1789-1838
    • The American State Papers provides primary source material on many aspects of early American history from 1789 to 1838 and consists of approximately 6280 numbered publications, largely Congressional but also containing Executive Department materials, issued from 1832-1861. Unlike the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, the publications in the American State Papers are not divided into reports and documents and do not include House and Senate journals. Approximately two-thirds of the publications cover the first 14 Congresses (1789-1817), whereas the remaining third chronologically overlap with the Serial Set from 1817-1838.


  • Anthropology Plus
    • Combines Anthropological Literature (Harvard) with the Anthropological Index (Royal Anthropological Institute UK). Worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works and obituaries in social, cultural, physical, biological and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, material culture and interdisciplinary studies.


  • Archive of Americana
    • The digital Archive of Americana is a family of comprehensive historical collections that allows researchers to discover and explore the United States in unprecedented depth and detail. The unique primary source materials offer opportunities for students and scholars to make original discoveries and new findings on nearly every aspect of the United States over nearly three centuries.


  • Communication & Mass Media Complete
    • Communication & Mass Media Complete is the premier database in the research fields of communication and mass media, indexing and abstracting 400 journals, 200 of which are available full text. Indexing coverage for most titles is from the early 1990s to the present. Citation searching is available from 2003 to the present.


  • CQ Researcher
    • Each week CQ Researcher examines, in-depth, a single "hot" issue in the news. Topics range from social issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports. Online access from 1991-present. Full text issues are available from 1996 to the present.


  • Criminal Justice Abstracts
    • Comprehensive coverage of journals, books and agency reports in criminolgy and related discliplines. Topics include crime trends, prevention projects, corrections and juvenile delinquency. Coverage: 1968-present.


  • DSM-IV-TR Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
    • The standard diagnostic tool used by mental health professionals worldwide to promote reliable research, accurate diagnosis, and thus appropriate treatment and patient care. Each psychiatric disorder with its corresponding diagnostic code is accompanied by a set of diagnostic criteria and descriptive details including associated features, prevalence, familial patterns, age-, culture-, and gender-specific features, and differential diagnosis.


  • EconLit
    • Contains citations, with abstracts, to articles from more than 600 economics journals. In addition, subject indexing and abstracts of books and subject indexing of dissertation titles are included. Coverage: 1969-present.


  • Education Research Complete
    • Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,840 journals, as well as full text for more than 950 journals. This database also includes full text for 81 books and monographs, and full text for numerous education-related conference papers.


  • Emerald Fulltext Library
    • Emerald provides full text access to over 100 journals in the fields of Business, Marketing, Education, Engineering, Management, Food and Nutrition Science, Healthcare Management and Library Science. Coverage years vary by title but most titles are available full text from the mid 1990s to the present.


  • ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)
    • Search the largest education database in the world for research documents, journal articles, technical reports, program descriptions and evaluations, and curricular materials in the field of education. Coverage: 1966-present.


  • ERIC.gov
    • The?free web?version of the ERIC database that includes the?ERIC thesaurus and provides ?access to more than 1.2 million?records of of journal articles and other education-related materials?indexed since 1966.? The content?is updated daily.


  • GreenFILE
    • GreenFILE offers scholarly, government and general-interest titles that cover all aspects of human impact on the environment. Specifically it includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done on each level to minimize negative impact. Topics covered include global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. It is multidisciplinary, drawing on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology.


  • Human Population & Natural Resource Management
    • Coverage includes relevant papers, reports, books and reviews from standard peer-reviewed scientific journals from 1995 to the present. To ensure comprehensive coverage, material from conference proceedings and hard-to-find gray literature has also been summarized. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • InfoTrac Professional Collection
    • Includes 300 premier full text titles for library and education professionals in all areas of library industry information, learning, counseling, research, health science, instructional technology, administration, personnel, occupational information, planning and development, multicultural information and more.


  • Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts
    • Covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, providing citations to articles from 1973 to the present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Updated monthly.


  • JSTOR
    • Archive of scholarly journals. JSTOR does not include issues from recent volumes, usually the last 2 to 5 years.


  • Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts
    • Provides coverage on subjects such as librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. LISTA indexes more than 600 periodicals plus books, research reports, and proceedings. Coverage dates back to the mid-1960s and is the oldest continuously produced database covering the field of information science.


  • Mental Measurements Yearbook
    • A comprehensive guide to more than 2,000 contemporary testing instruments in psychology, education, business, and leadership.


  • PAIS
    • Index to the literature on public affairs. Coverage: 1972-present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • PAIS Archive
    • Older files for PAIS. 1915 - 1976; available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Physical Education Index
    • Covers scholarly and trade literature from peer-reviewed journals, report literature, conference proceedings, trade magazines, patents, articles from the popular press, and many other publications. Beginning in January 2001, includes abstracts, email addresses, and expanded publisher and author information. Subject coverage includes physical education curricula, sports medicine, dance, sport law, kinesiology, motor learning, recreation, standardized fitness tests, sports equipment, business and marketing, coaching and training, sport sociology/psychology, health education, and physical therapy. Coverage: 1970-present.


  • PRISMA (Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Human?ticas)
    • PRISMA (Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Human?ticas) offers full-text scholarly journals in the social sciences and humanities for the interdisciplinary academic study of Hispanic and Latin America and the Caribbean Basin.


  • PsycARTICLES
    • Full-text articles from peer-reviewed journals in general and specialized psychology.


  • Psychiatry Online
    • Psychiatry Online is a web-based portal featuring the DSM-IV-TR, a critical reference tool in psychiatry. The site is also a collection of resources from the American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. that includes journals, textbooks, practice guidelines, self assessment tools, and medication information handouts. This database will be of use to students in psychology, social work, nursing, and many other disciplines.


  • PsycINFO
    • Produced by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO contains citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and dissertations in psychology, as well as the psychological aspects of related disciplines. Includes international material from 1,300 periodicals. Coverage: 1887-present.


  • Risk Abstracts
    • Provides a comprehensive source for interdisciplinary perspectives in this evolving field ranging from public and environmental health to social issues and psychological aspects. Indexes 736 research publications from 1990 to the present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Serial Set Maps
    • Map images, records, and indexing for maps published in Reports and Documents of the 42nd Congress, 3rd session (1872) through the 52nd Congress, 1st session (1892).


  • Social Work Abstracts
    • Social Work Abstracts offers extensive coverage of more than 450 social work and human services journals dating back to 1977. Produced by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the database provides citations and abstracts dealing with all aspects of the social work field, including theory and practice, areas of service and social issues and problems. Researchers seeking scholarly and professional perspectives on subjects such as therapy, education, human services, addictions, child and family welfare, mental health, civil and legal rights, economics and more will find Social Work Abstracts to be an indispensable resource.


  • SocINDEX
    • SocINDEX is a comprehensive sociology research database. The index features more than 1,300,000 records with subject headings from a 15,000 term sociology-specific thesaurus. This database also contains informative abstracts for more than 590 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895. In addition, SocINDEX provides data mined from more than 500 "priority" coverage journals as well as 1,040 "selective" coverage journals. Further, extensive indexing for books, monographs, conference papers, and other sources is included. Searchable cited references are also provided. SocINDEX offers coverage from all subdisciplines of sociology, including abortion, anthropology, criminology, criminal justice, cultural sociology, demography, economic development, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, politics, religion, rural sociology, social psychology, social structure, social work, sociological theory, sociology of education, substance abuse, urban studies, violence, welfare, and many others.


  • Teacher Reference Center
    • Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 270 of the most popular teacher and administrator journals and magazines to assist professional educators.


  • Toxicology Abstracts
    • Covers issues from social poisons and substance abuse to natural toxins, from legislation and recommended standards to environmental issues. Indexes 291 research publications from 1981 to the present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • U.S. Congressional Serial Set, 1817-1980
    • Begun in 1817 as the official collection of congressional reports and documents, this collection was published in a "serial" fashion, hence its name. This digitized version from Readex includes congressional documents from the 15th (1817) through the 70th (1928) Congress. The complete set should be completed by Fall 2008.


  • Web of Science
    • Provides an additional access point to the popular citation databases. Coverage for Science Citation Index is 1900-present and Social Science Citation Index is 1956-present.


  • Women and Social Movements in the United States
    • Women and Social Movements in the United States covers the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000. The collection currently includes 100 document projects and archives with almost 3,950 documents and 150,000 pages of additional full-text documents. It also includes book, film, and website reviews, notes from the archives, and teaching tools. Includes access to the online version of Notable American Women and the database on Commissions on the Status of Women.
