Agriculture & Biology Databases

Unless otherwise indicated, remote access to these databases is available only to NMSU faculty, students, and staff.

  • AGRICOLA
    • Covers every major agricultural subject, including agricultural engineering and marketing, animal breeding, entomology, environmental pollution, farm management, foods and feeds, pesticides, rural sociology, veterinary medicine, and water resources. Citations consist of journal articles, book chapters, monographs, conference proceedings, serials, technical reports, and other materials on a range of agricultural topics. More than 5,000 journal titles are covered. Coverage: 1970 - present.


  • Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts
    • Provides access to 135 research publications focusing on agricultural products involving both plants and animals, new applications across the food industry, and wide-ranging environmental developments. Also focuses on plant genome studies. 1993 - present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Aquatic Pollution and Environmental Quality
    • 5289 serials are currently monitored for inclusion in this database that focuses on research and policy on the contamination of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and estuaries. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Indexing from 1990 to the present.


  • Bacteriology Abstracts (Microbiology B)
    • From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Topics range from bacterial immunology and vaccinations to diseases of man and animals. Valuable to general microbiologists, bacteriologists, environmentalists, medical and veterinary laboratory staff, agricultural researchers, cell biologists, geneticists, toxicologists, and many others. 2002 - present.


  • BIOSIS
    • Abstracts from journals and conferences in the biological sciences. Coverage: 1985-present.


  • Birds of North America
    • Life histories of North American birds; includes videos, images and audio clips.


  • CABDirect
    • Index to international literature in agriculture, with access to book, conference proceedings and journal articles.  Coverage: 1973-present.


  • CAB Abstracts Archive (1910-1972)
    • CAB Abstracts Archive, produced by CABI Publishing, is comprised of 17 printed abstract journals produced between 1910 and 1972 and includes over 1,860,000 records. CAB Abstracts Archive provides information on agricultural science, veterinary medicine, nutrition and natural resources. Additionally, other topics covered in the database include: biodiversity, pest control, environmental pollution, animal diseases, food production, managing natural resources, plant and animal breeding and more.


  • Ecology Abstracts
    • Indexes research publications from 1982 to the present on resource and ecosystems management and modeling, the impact of climate, water resources, soil, and man on the environment, and growing environmental problems such as depletion, erosion, and pollution. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Environment Complete
    • Environment Complete contains more than 1,957,000 records from more than 1,700 domestic and international titles going back to the 1940s (including 1,125 active core titles) as well as more than 120 monographs. The database also contains full text for more than 680 journals. Covers subject areas of ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.


  • Environmental Engineering Abstracts
    • Covers the world literature pertaining to technological and engineering aspects of air and water quality, environmental safety, and energy production. More than 700 primary journals are thoroughly indexed and abstracted. Over 2,500 additional sources, including monographs and conference proceedings, are also monitored for relevant articles.   • Environmental Impact Statements
    • Provides detailed abstracts of all the hundreds of environmental impact statements issued by the United States government, also indexing them from 1985 to the present for easy reference. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management
    • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management provides multidisciplinary coverage of the environmental sciences. Abstracts and citations are drawn from over scientific journals, conference proceedings, reports, monographs, books and government publications.


  • FSTA (Food Science and Technology Abstracts)
    • Worldwide coverage of all scientific and technological aspects of the processing and manufacturing of human food products. Bibliographic information, indexing information and abstracts.


  • GreenFILE
    • GreenFILE offers scholarly, government and general-interest titles that cover all aspects of human impact on the environment. Specifically it includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done on each level to minimize negative impact. Topics covered include global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. It is multidisciplinary, drawing on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology.


  • Health and Safety Sciences Abstracts
    • Provides a comprehensive, timely survey of recent work relating to public health, safety, and industrial hygiene. Indexes 1,033 periodicals from 1981 to the present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Homeland Security Digital Library Collection
    • The HSDL Collection provides quick access to important U.S. policy documents, presidential directives, and national strategy documents as well as specialized resources such as theses and reports from various universities, organizations and local and state agencies.


  • Human Population & Natural Resource Management
    • Coverage includes relevant papers, reports, books and reviews from standard peer-reviewed scientific journals from 1995 to the present. To ensure comprehensive coverage, material from conference proceedings and hard-to-find gray literature has also been summarized. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Industrial and Applied Microbiology Abstracts (Microbiology A)
    • Significant findings and practical applications from 539 journals in agricultural, food and beverage, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries are indexed from 1982 to the present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • JSTOR
    • Archive of scholarly journals. JSTOR does not include issues from recent volumes, usually the last 2 to 5 years.


  • Microbiology Abstracts A (Industrial and Applied Microbiology)
    • Significant findings and practical applications from 539 journals in agricultural, food and beverage, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries are indexed from 1982 to the present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Microbiology Abstracts B (Bacteriology)
    • From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Topics range from bacterial immunology and vaccinations to diseases of man and animals.   • Pollution Abstracts
    • Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts provides access to the literature of the environment, including air pollution, waste management, toxicology and health, and environmental action. 1981 - present.


  • Risk Abstracts
    • Provides a comprehensive source for interdisciplinary perspectives in this evolving field ranging from public and environmental health to social issues and psychological aspects. Indexes 736 research publications from 1990 to the present. From Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • SciFinder Scholar
    • SciFinder Scholar provides access to CAplus, MedLine, CASREACT, and the Registry database from Chemical Abstracts Service. Includes journal articles, book chapters, patents, conference proceedings, technical reports, substance database and dissertations covered in Chemical Abstracts, as well as information on engineering, biochemistry, medicine, and biology.


  • Sustainability Science Abstracts
    • This database explores all aspects of sustainable development, human population and demography, and societal issues involving natural resource management. Also covered are the topics of conservation of natural resources, species diversity, protection of habitats and ecosystems, and the economy. Coverage includes relevant papers, reports, books and reviews from standard peer-reviewed scientific journals. Material from conference proceedings and hard-to-find gray literature is also included in summarized form.


  • Toxicology Abstracts
    • Covers issues from social poisons and substance abuse to natural toxins, from legislation and recommended standards to environmental issues. Indexes 291 research publications from 1981 to the present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • TOXLINE
    • Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, TOXLINE provides bibliographic citations and abstracts from the care journal literature in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens and teratogens. Updated monthly from the last 5 years to the present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Turfgrass
    • Access to published materials reporting on aspects of turfgrass and its maintenance. TGIF indexes a wide range of materials including journals, monographs, fact sheets and pamphlets, and web documents. Most records in TGIF contain informative abstracts; some contain full text or are linked to web-accessible full text. Records in TGIF are indexed using controlled vocabulary from the Turfgrass Thesaurus, produced by the Turfgrass Information Center, with additional identifiers where needed.


  • Water Resources Abstracts
    • This database contains abstracts from journals, conferences and reports covering engineering, scientific and environmental perspectives on water resources. Coverage spans 1967 - present. Available from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.


  • Web of Science
    • Provides an additional access point to the popular citation databases. Coverage for Science Citation Index is 1900-present and Social Science Citation Index is 1956-present.


  • Wildlife & Ecology Studies Worldwide
    • Covering 1935 (and some earlier) to the present, this is the world's largest index to literature on wild mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It includes more than 670,388 bibliographic records, many of which include abstracts.


  • Zoological Record
    • Citations to articles in over 6,000 serials plus 1,500 non-serial publications, including professional journals, magazines, newsletters, monographs, books, dissertations, and conference proceedings, on all aspects of zoology, such as biochemistry, behavior, ecology, evolution, genetics, etc. NMSU Library coverage is through Web of Science, from 1864 to the present.
