BRANSON LIBRARY:

In addition to housing the current periodicals in all subject areas, Branson Library houses periodicals in all formats on agriculture, business, the sciences, and health as well as older periodicals that have been bound or replaced by microform (microfilm/fiche) on the arts, education, humanities, and social sciences. All newspapers received by NMSU library are housed in the periodicals room.  In addition all Federal Government Documents microforms are housed here.

Current Periodicals

All current journals are housed in the Branson periodicals reading room, located on the west side of the first floor.  Current issues normally cover one to three years of a title.  As more recent issues are received, the older issues are either replaced with microform, or  bound, and shelved upstairs in their designated library.  If a current periodical appears missing from the shelves, please ask for assistance at  the desk.

Bound Periodicals

Bound periodicals are shelved by subject on the upper floors in both libraries.  They are arranged by call number and then by volume or date of publication.

Newspapers

NMSU Library receives a variety of daily and weekly newspapers.  Current newspapers are either stored in hanging folders or behind the service desk.  Newspapers are kept for varying lengths of time, and some are later available on microfilm.

Microforms

Some periodical titles are only available on microform (microfilm, microfiche, or microcard) while others have only back-issues on microform.  Both microfiche and microfilm are located on the first floor of Branson Library, and arranged by call number.  Both the ERIC Document collection and the Federal Government Documents collection are housed at Branson as well.

Electronic Journals

The library subscribes to numerous e-journal titles accessible through Article Databases. For basic information on accessing the databases, ask at the Periodicals or Reference service desks. If a journal is available electronically it will be listed in the NMSU Library online catalog as such.

Searching for Articles

Numerous full-text databases are available through Article Databases. Frequently Asked Questions

I need to find some articles on a particular subject.  Where do I begin?
A good place to start is Expanded Academic ASAP, available through Article Databases. For information on accessing articles, ask at the Periodicals or Reference service desks.

Where are the older issues?
Back-issues are housed in each library, divided by subject. Older volumes are either bound and become part of the upstairs collection or are part of the microform collection on the first floor of Branson Library.

Can I check out a current issue?
No. Current issues in the reading room do not circulate. These are available for use in the room only, and copy machines are available.

Where can I purchase a copy card?
From one of two card dispensers located near the copy center in Zuhl Library and by the circulation desk in Branson.

I found an article source, but the library doesn't own this journal.  What can I do?
Order it through Interlibrary Loan.

Where do I get the pages I printed out from one of the library's public workstations?
In Branson the printer is located in the central lobby area, while Zuhl's is located in the Reference area. You will need a copy card to generate the copies at both locations.

How could I find out if UTEP or UNM has this journal?
You can access the UTEP and UNM library catalogs, as well as many others, by going to one of the library's Internet Resources pages.
