Government documents in the NMSU Library do not have the same type of call number as other materials in the library. Rather, they are organized by the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system. Government agency books, periodicals, microfiche, pamphlets, posters, media materials and CD-ROMs are organized and shelved according to the issuing agency and sub-agencies (such as "A" for Agriculture Department and "S" for State Department). For example, the SuDoc number for one issue of the periodical AgExporter is A 67.7/3:8/4. Each part of the number has a meaning:

           Agency A = Agriculture Department
Sub-agency 67 = Foreign Agricultural Service
Title 7/3: = AgExporter
Volume 8 = Volume
Number 4 = Number 4

Each part of a SuDoc number is read as whole number, not as a decimal. For example, some selected State Department documents would be shelved in this order:

S 1.1: 964-68/v. 13 Foreign Relations of the U.S.: Western Europe Region
S 1.2: C 61/2: Climate Action Report
S 1.3: 73/1905 Department of State Bulletin
S 1.8: 995/2 Diplomatic List
S 1.26: 93 Commitment for Progress
S 1.38: 65 Southeast Asia: Critical Area in a Divided World
S 1. 67: 109 German-American Cultural Relations

The Branson Library reference staff will be happy to help you locate documents by number according to the signs posted on the ends of each shelf and the labels on the microfiche drawers.
