DEFINING THE BORDER REGION

  • La Paz Agreement

    Environmental Protection Agency

    Established a framework for cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico, and defined the area covered by the agreement as 60 miles (100 km) on either side of the U.S./Mexico international boundary. This area is used by other agencies to define the border region.

  • U.S.-Mexico Border Environment Program: Border 2012

    Environmental Protection Agency

    A 10-year environmental pgram for the U.S.-Mexico border region. Its mission statement is "to protect the environment and public health in the U.S.-Mexico border region, consistent with the principles of sustainable development".

  • Border XXI Program

    Environmental Protection Agency

    This is the previous U.S.-Mexico environmental program, run from 1996 to 2001.

  • Border EcoWeb

    South Dakota State University in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency

    Facilitates access to information on the U.S.-Mexico border region.

  • International Boundary and Water Commission

    Department of State

    Applies boundary and water treaties between the U.S. and Mexico, and deals with any problems arising for these treaties.

  • Border Environmental Cooperation Commission

    Works with various federal agencies

    Preservation and protection of human health and the environment in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Created through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and covers the border region 62 miles on the U.S. side and 186 miles on the Mexico side.

  • U.S.-Mexico Border Field Coordinating Committee

    Department of the Interior

    Facilitates communication and coordination within the Department of Interior, and with Mexican counterparts dealing with the border's natural and cultural resources

  • Good Neighbor Environmental Board

    Environmental Protection Agency

    Acting as an independent federal advisory committee, it advises the President and Congress on good neighbor practicies along the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • Bureau of Reclamation

    Works with utilities related to surface water supplies. Specific to the border region are:
