The Big Read

What is it?

The Big Read is a nation-wide reading initiative that encourages reading by asking communities to come together to read and discuss one book. The NMSU Library received a $10,000 competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in order to spearhead the Big Read effort in Las Cruces.

The project will feature a variety of programming and activities for all ages, promoting the community-wide reading of the novel Bless Me, Última by New Mexican author Rudolfo Anaya.

How it works:

The NMSU Library will partner with The Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, the libraries of the Las Cruces Public Schools, the Doña Ana Arts Council, the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico and many more community partners to sponsor book discussion groups, programs, contests and other events related to Bless Me, Última throughout the month of October.

Please take some time to look at our web site, check out the Calendar of Events, and read more about this charming and engaging novel. Planning is ongoing, so check back frequently to see what we have added to the program.

Organizations and individuals with questions regarding the Big Read are invited to contact the project director, Mardi Mahaffy at (575) 646-6925 or mmahaffy@lib.nmsu.edu. Contributors wishing to support the Big Read festival are asked to please send a check payable to the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico.
