For this class you will be required to search for articles on a topic in specific journals. To help you complete this assignment, Library staff has put together this web page showing you how to navigate through the NMSU Library's resources.
The journals you need may be available in paper, electronically, or both. To find articles, you will need to start in an index or database that has citations, abstracts, or full-text. The table below shows you what index or database to begin with when you are interested in a specific journal title.

When you need to find articles on a topic from a specific journal, the easiest way is to use an "advanced search" within a database. [NOTE: Not all databases label these search options as an "advanced search" - but most will provide an option where you can search using multiple fill-in boxes.]
Input your topic into one box as a key word search (e.g., "thomas jefferson"), use AND to connect this box to a second box, put the name of the journal in the second box (e.g., "new republic"), and set the second box to search in the "journal name" (or journal title) field.

Sometimes the perfect article is not available full-text in the database you are using. When that happens, write down the title, author, volume, issue and date of the article you will be looking for. The article might be available electronically in another database or electronic journal. To find out more about checking the electronic availability of a cited article, visit these instructions about Finding Articles in Electronic Journals.
The online catalog lists materials that the library has purchased or subscribed to - including print journals. The catalog does not index articles; it will only show if the library has a subscription to the given journal. Not all articles are available electronically, so you may need to visit these instructions about Finding Articles through the Online Catalog.
If the library does not have the journal that you need, you can request a copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan. Because it may take some time to get a copy of the article from another library, plan to submit your request with plenty of time to spare.
