Loretto Academy

The Loretto Academy of Las Cruces was a Catholic school for young women started in 1870.  It's goal was for the "Americanization" of New Mexicans. Las Cruces at that time, was a small agricultural community with a population of around 1,300 people, 94 percent of whom were native born and according to census data, were school-aged girls who could neither read nor write. This made it an ideal environment for a school for young women.
