Welcome to the Pete V. Domenici Archives
Pete V. Domenici, the son of Italian immigrants and a former City Commissioner and Chairman of the City Commission for Albuquerque, was elected U.S. Senator from New Mexico in 1972. At the end of his term, in 2008, Domenici will have served 36 years in congress. He will rank as the longest serving senator in New Mexico history and one the top 15 longest serving senators in U.S. history.
According to Garrey Carruthers, NMSU vice president for economic development, "Sen. Domenici has had a hand in shaping so many things on the national level, from nuclear nonproliferation to the federal budget to behavioral health and is one of New Mexico and NMSU's greatest friends as shown by his efforts supporting economic development around the state and through programs at New Mexico State University."
About the Collection
In November 2007, nearly 2,000 boxes filled with documents and memorabilia from the senator's offices chronicling his legacy arrived and are now housed in a controlled environment at Branson Library. In all, the initial load of documents weighed approximately thirty tons. It took three tractor-trailers and two and a half days to load, transfer and unload the shipment. Additional shipments of printed materials and electronic documents as well as memorabilia, including awards and photos, are expected to arrive at NMSU later in 2008.
These archives offer unique resources to researchers here at NMSU, the state of New Mexico and beyond. They will provide invaluable information in the study of his contributions in economic development, energy, the federal budget, national security, natural resources, behavioral health, nuclear non-proliferation and other topics.
