Reference Assistance
Reference assistance is also available. This includes finding specific facts, assisting in developing a research plan or search strategy, and helping users navigate research databases to find pertinent information. For this service use one of the following methods:

Request Books or Journal Articles
Distance education students may request books, journals, or other library materials to complete their course work. In order to take advantage of this service distance students must register with the Information Delivery Services.

Registration: Students need to register with
Information Delivery Services to request book and article delivery. To access the registration page, students should enter their universal NMSU userid and password. This is the same userid and password students use to log into their "My NMSU" account, to WebCT, etc.

Books: Students may order books available at the NMSU Library. Check the NMSU Library Catalog, http://libcat.nmsu.edu. If the NMSU Library owns the book and it is available, it will be checked out and sent to the student with a loan period of three weeks for undergraduates or a semester for graduate students. Any book may be recalled by another user after three weeks. The NMSU Library will send the book(s) to the student's address free of charge; however, it is the student's responsibility to return the books to the library in the provided pre-paid mailer.

If the NMSU Library does NOT own the book, students can place the order with the NMSU Information Delivery Services office and the item will be mailed to the student. Distance education students can also place the order through their local library's Interlibrary Loan Office. Because the normal loan period for books borrowed via interlibrary loan is two weeks, student will probably receive the book faster and have a longer loan period if it is ordered locally. Use one form for each title requested.

Students who visit the main campus may check out books directly from the library. An NMSU ID is always required to check out materials.

Journal Articles: Students may also order articles. In most cases, there is no charge. For best results, first check the NMSU Online Catalog and the Electronic Journals list for articles directly available from NMSU Library. These locally available articles will generally be sent within 24 hours; however requests are handled on a first come, first served basis.

If the NMSU Library does not own a requested article, it must be ordered through Information Delivery Services and it will take longer than 24 hours to obtain and deliver the article. The average delivery time is about 4 to 6 days from the receipt of the request to notification. For each article request, students must provide a complete citation, name, status, address, phone number, and email address if available.

Passport Program
The PASSPORT agreement allows NMSU students to directly borrow materials from all the New Mexico academic libraries except UNM Health Sciences Center Library. The Passport form must be presented at the circulation desk of the library you are visiting. Download the Passport application here.

Alliance Passport
AISTI (Alliance for Innovation in Science and Technology Information) encourages reciprocal borrowing among the New Mexico research corridor academic institutions and the state's national laboratories. To participate, you will need an AISTI INFO-EX Card (available at either circulation desk) and your current university ID card. Privileges will be valid for one year from date of issue. Books may be returned via courier service only to the academic libraries, other returns are the borrower's responsibility. Inquire at either NMSU Library circulation desk for more information.

Course Reserves
Some classes may have electronic reserves available. To check, go to the Library's Online Reserve Desk at http://lib.nmsu.edu/reserves/resindex.html. Then click on the link for the appropriate semester and find your professor's name.
