Library Serials Review and Assessment Project Announced

The New Mexico State University Library is evaluating its current serial subscriptions to determine how best to meet the teaching and research needs of the University, given available resources. The Library is not conducting a cancellation project; instead, it is taking both a broad and a detailed look at its subscriptions to make sure it is current with the information needs of the academic community.

Starting January 16, 2007, and continuing through February 28, 2007, the Library is encouraging the university community - faculty, staff and students - to review and comment on a list of approximately 2,800 serial titles.

The Library has set up a web site, http://lib.nmsu.edu/scrap, which provides in-depth information about the project. Serials lists, sorted by academic department and by broad disciplinary groups, are available for download from this site. Each list provides information on individual serial titles (publisher, electronic availability, three-year subscription costs and usage).

Campus library liaisons and academic department heads have already received these lists via email. The Library asks that departments and individuals complete their rankings of serials and return the ranked lists to Susan Beck, Collection Development Coordinator, by February 28, 2007.

The Serials Collection Review and Assessment Project has several goals:

* To realign the Library's serials collection with current University instructional and research needs based on available funding
* To allow for the broadest possible participation of University community stakeholders by involving faculty, students and staff in the serials prioritization process
* To provide assessment outputs in terms of collection goals and strengths
* To develop a serials review model that can be integrated routinely

The Library encourages all who are interested to help with the serials review project. A frequently asked questions page is available at http://lib.nmsu.edu/scrap/faq.shtml to address concerns about the project. For more information, please contact Susan Beck at (505) 646-6171 or email susabeck@nmsu.edu.
