Library Seeks Campus Input on Journal Review
The New Mexico State University Library will continue to work on the Serials Collection Review and Assessment Project throughout Summer 2007 due in part to the complexity of the project and also because the one-semester time frame originally planned was insufficient to complete the project. Library personnel are working on a list of titles to add and to cancel from the Library's collections based on campus input.
This project is complex because the Library's licenses with electronic journal publishers (Wiley, Springer, Elsevier, etc.) stipulate different requirements when libraries wish to cancel titles. The Library has negotiated some of its license agreements in consortia environments with other academic and research libraries. In one particular consortia agreement, all member libraries signed contracts with journal publishers that ensured low overall subscription costs based on the understanding that all libraries would maintain the same dollar amount for our overall subscriptions. Needless to say, negotiating this final dollar amount has been a challenge.
In mid-August 2007, the Library will post a list of titles to add and cancel. Immediately following for a period of three weeks, the Library encourages members of the University community to comment on the titles proposed for cancellation and addition. Please send your comments to the Subject Specialist assigned to your academic department (visit http://lib.nmsu.edu/depts/collserv/sel-liai.shtml) or contact Susan Beck, Collection Development Coordinator, at susabeck@nmsu.edu or (505) 646-6171.
