Historical Calendar Dedicated to Las Cruces

The Rio Grande Historical Collections of the New Mexico State University Library is offering its annual calendar for sale. The 2006 calendar, “Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley,” is dedicated to the Las Cruces area and its residents past and present. Copies of the calendar can be purchased for $5 each at the second floor administrative offices at NMSU’s Zuhl Library or the fourth floor Archives research room at Branson Library.

With special memories of our city, the calendar makes a great gift. The photographs provide momentary glimpses of the land and people of Las Cruces over the past one hundred years. The images capture the complex and evolving bond between people and their natural environment.

The calendar shows the history and diversity of our community. It shows a place of contradictions. Blessed with water, Las Cruces is also a city of drought. Las Cruces knows poverty, but it is also home to a university and an aspiring middle class. It is a place of informality, but it also upholds tradition and ritual generation after generation. It is a place for hard work as well as recreation.
