New Mexico Library Association Announces Awards
The New Mexico Library Association (NMLA) announced several awards and scholarships on April 10 during the association's annual conference in Las Cruces.
Susan Pinkerton of Las Cruces was awarded the New Mexico Library Leadership Award. As the director of the library science program at NMSU-Doņa Ana Community College, Pinkerton developed an online curriculum leading to an associate of applied science degree and a certificate of completion in library science skills. The program is recognized and highly regarded nationwide, and its graduates and students hold positions in libraries in New Mexico and beyond. Pinkerton, who is active in NMLA, has also received awards from the American Library Association and the Mountain Plains Library Association.
NMLA has been giving awards since 1957 to honor those who have made important contributions on behalf of New Mexico libraries. Other honorees include Alison Almquist of Albuquerque, who received the Honorary Life Membership Award. Allen Stenger of Alamogordo was awarded the New Mexico Library Amigo Award. State Senator Bill Payne of Albuquerque received the Legislator of the Year Award. Cordelia Hooee of Zuni received the Community Achievement Award, and James Carpenter of Farmington won the NMLA logo contest.
NMLA also awards scholarships to those pursuing a career in the field. Debi Croney of Los Alamos received the Marion Dorroh Memorial Scholarship for graduate study in library science. NMLA College Scholarships were awarded to Breezy Gutierrez of Anton Chico, Teresa Martinez of Albuquerque and Isabel Leyba of Santa Fe.
