Big Read Film, Workshop and Evening of Dramatic Readings Announced

The Big Read, a community celebration of Rudolfo Anaya's novel "Bless Me, Ultima" and reading in general, continues with the showing of the film "The Milagro Beanfield War," a writing workshop and a gala evening of dramatic readings from Anaya's works. The Oscar award-winning film "The Milagro Beanfield War" will be shown on Saturday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theatre. Sonia Braga and John Heard play characters who work to save a small Northern New Mexico farming community from developers. The movie also stars Rubén Blades and Melanie Griffith, and was directed by Robert Redford.

NMSU English professor Deborah LaPorte will conduct a writing workshop for ages 17 and up, "Make Your Own Big Read!" on Sunday, October 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library. To register, call (575) 528-4005. This workshop, guaranteed to spark your right brain, will include creative writing exercises, reading exercises, discussion of the writing process and much more. The emphasis will be on creating new work, and all experience levels are welcome.

"Rudolfo Anaya X Four: An Evening of Readings in English, Spanish, French and German Honoring Rudolfo Anaya" will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7:00 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theatre. Dramatic readings from the works of Rudolfo Anaya in English, Spanish, French and German will be performed by local celebrities Denise Chávez, Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Jens Tillmanns and Dr. Claude Fouillade. A celebrated Chicana novelist, Chávez has published several novels and collections including "Loving Pedro Infante: a Novel," "Face of an Angel," "The Woman Who Knew the Language of Animals" and "The Last of the Menu Girls." She received the American Book Award for "Face of an Angel."
