Martha Andrews to Lecture on Recruitment of Early NMSU Faculty

New Mexico State University Library assistant professor Martha Andrews will present a lecture "Go West, Young Man, and Teach: Recruiting Faculty in 1891 New Mexico" on Thursday, October 19, at 7 p.m. at the University Museum in Kent Hall.

In 1889, Hiram Hadley set out to hire faculty members possessing what he described as "brains, integrity and ambition" to teach the first classes of the newly organized New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now NMSU. In her lecture, Andrews will explore how Hadley "sold" his vision of the new school and what kind of men and women answered his call. The lecture is based on Andrews' research in the NMSU Library's Hobson-Huntsinger University Archives.

Andrews is the archivist for the Hobson-Huntsinger University Archives. She came to the NMSU Library in 2004 from the East Coast, where she worked at institutions including The Madeira School, the Smithsonian Institution and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and the University of Pittsburgh.
