University Library Debuts New Search Feature
The New Mexico State University Library is pleased to announce its new One Search service. Unlike a standard Internet search, such as Google or Yahoo, which searches a fraction of the Internet and cannot search subscription-based databases, One Search simultaneously searches across all of the Library’s 165+ databases, the online catalog and selected web sites, such as Google Scholar.
This powerful, easy-to-use search feature, called a federated search in library terminology, resides prominently on the Library’s main web page and has multiple search options.
The default search finds whatever a user enters into the search box and searches all databases. From there, a search can be limited in several ways, such as database, date, subject, author, journal title and full text. Advanced searching allows users to combine multiple concepts in different ways, such as finding an author’s name combined with a subject and setting the limits mentioned above. Search results can be printed, emailed or downloaded to a portable storage device.
A partnership between Serials Solutions and the NMSU Library, One Search is accessible on campus. Off campus access is available to authorized NMSU users via their Banner login.
Upon trying One Search, NMSU faculty member Dr. Laurence Creider remarked “I was pleased to find material that I had not known about.... I think federated searching is a wonderful thing, quickly presenting high-value results from a common, single point of access.”
The Library's implementation team, Susan Beck, Ellen Bosman, Jenny Lockwood, Mardi Mahaffy, Cindy Pierard, Teresa Roberts and Tracey Thompson, could not agree more.
