NMSU Library Adds More Digital Collections and Databases

The New Mexico State University Library is continuing to add many much-needed databases, electronic journal backfiles and digital collections in support of student and faculty research needs.

Last week, the Library announced the addition of several important American government and history digital collections. This week it has added important interdisciplinary collections that benefit the entire NMSU community.

* American Periodical Series Online, 1740-1900
A unique collection that contains digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals originating between 1741--marking the launch date of Andrew Bradford's American Magazine and Benjamin Franklin's General Magazine--and 1900, a new era in periodical literature. American Periodical Series Online is derived from the acclaimed American Periodicals Series microform collection. It features over 1,100 periodicals spanning nearly 200 years. Titles range from America's first scientific journal, Medical Repository, to popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies' Home Journal.

* Annual Reviews [Complete Backfile]
Since 1932, Annual Reviews has offered comprehensive and timely collections of critical reviews written by leading scientists. Annual Reviews volumes are published each year for 33 focused disciplines within the Biomedical, Physical, and Social Sciences. These publications are among the most highly cited in scientific literature (Journal Citation Report, ISI) and each year they critically review the most significant primary research literature to both guide researchers to the principal contributions of the field and help them keep up to date with their research. Researchers can access the entire Annual Review backfile from the Library's Electronic Journal publisher list at http://yw2pn3mr9l.search.serialssolutions.com/. In addition, when researchers find a citation to a chapter in an Annual Review volume, they can link to the full text via the Library's article linker service.

* New York Times, 1851-2004
The New York Times is frequently referred to as America's newspaper of record due to its stature, scope and longevity. The historic New York Times (1851-2004) database offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue printed.

* JSTOR Collections: Arts & Sciences II, III & Biology
JSTOR (Journal STORage) provides electronic access to an archive of essential scholarly journals. JSTOR electronic journal collections grow over time, incrementally adding new volumes to the collection. Typically the most recent volume of a journal is 3 to 5 years old.
--The Arts & Sciences II collection comprises 125 titles from disciplines such as economics, history, and Latin American studies.
--The Arts & Sciences III collection contains 150 periodical titles focusing on language and literature, music, film studies, folklore, and the study of the history of art and architecture.
--The Biology collection contains 100 core titles in the areas of biodiversity, conservation, paleontology, evolutionary biology, plant science, cell biology and zoology.

* Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps (New Mexico)
This historical collection consists of a uniform series of digitized large-scale maps, dating from 1867 through 1969, and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of cities. Originally designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property, Sanborn maps are meticulously detailed and provide an excellent resource for historians. The New Mexico collection contains 209 maps from 51 cities, spanning a period from the 1880s to the late 1940s.

* Web of Science (Science Citation Index & Social Science Citation Index)
Although this resource is not new to the NMSU community, the Library has greatly expanded access to this invaluable research tool. NMSU researchers are no longer confined to searching the past twenty years of scholarly literature but now have access to the complete Science Citation Index (1900-present) and Social Science Citation Index (1956-present).

* Zoological Record
Up until now, NMSU researchers only had access to the past two years of indexing in Zoological Record, the oldest continuing database of animal biology. The NMSU Library now provides electronic access to the entire Zoological Record, from 1864 to the present, giving its researchers the most complete record of animal science and taxonomy literature for living and fossil species currently available.

All of the above databases are available from the Library's Article Databases page at http://lib.nmsu.edu/article.shtml with the exception of the Annual Review backfile which is listed at http://yw2pn3mr91.search.serialssolutions.com.

Beck, the Library's Collection Development Coordinator, at (575) 646-6171 or susabeck@lib.nmsu.edu, or your Library subject specialist listed at http://lib.nmsu.edu/depts/collserv/sel-liai.shtml.
