Dr. Herb Beebe Establishes Tombaugh Archive Fund

This spring, the Rio Grande Historical Collections was fortunate to receive a gift of the unpublished papers of Dr. Clyde W. Tombaugh from the Tombaugh family.

Dr. Tombaugh is the discoverer of the planet Pluto.  The collection is comprised of 150 boxes of papers, including Dr. Tombaugh’s letters to his family and letters to and from other astronomers, and a large quantity of other materials.  The collection deserves

to be arranged, described and made available to the academic community and the public.

The salary of a temporary processing assistant has been provided for six months by a $8,500 grant from the New Mexico Historical Records Advisory Board.  Dr. Herbert A. Beebe, a NMSU professor emeritus, has generously established a fund to continue the

processing for an additional six months and to provide funds for preservation supplies for and conservation treatment of these valuable and fragile materials.

Gifts are being accepted for the Clyde W. Tombaugh Archive Project from all interested parties.  Please make your check out to the NMSU Foundation and note that the contribution is for the Clyde W. Tombaugh Archive Project (fund 69033).  Send in care of the NMSU Foundation to P.O. Box 3590, Las Cruces, NM 88003.  For more information, please contact Dr. Beebe at 646-1699 or Jeanette Smith at 646-7492.
