POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position directly reports to the Associate Dean of the Library and is responsible for the daily operational supervision and management of the department which currently has 13 FTE faculty, 5 FTE classified staff, and 2 FTE students. Program areas include reference desk services, library instruction, collection development, and government documents. Specific duties include: responsible for programmatic planning and personnel management of the department; encouraging the professional development of staff; as a member of the department heads group and the management group advises the Dean of the Library on library-wide issues; contributes to meeting library goals/objectives/targets; assures library services are user satisfaction oriented, works with the dean and development officer in a highly collaborative setting on fund raising. As a member of the library faculty will pursue an active and ongoing program of professional development, research, and service appropriate for his/her rank at the university.
Required: MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program; a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public services within an academic research library setting; demonstrated evidence of successful progressive supervisory and management experience; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; evidence of creativity in problem-solving; strong organizational skills; strong ability to work in collaborative group structures; strong in team building skills; demonstrated leadership skills; effective at multi-tasking.
Preferred: Strong customer-satisfaction service orientation; skilled in the development/implementation of electronic service delivery; extensive, in-depth knowledge of reference collections; experience in teaching library skills/literacy using a variety of instructional delivery approaches.
